Super Micro Sends Positive Signal as Investors Await Google, Tesla and IBM

On Wednesday morning, investors await the first barrage of the most important earnings reports of the 2026 second quarter. Magnificent Seven names Alphabet (GOOGL) and Tesla (TSLA) report after the close Wednesday. IBM (IBM) and ServiceNow (NOW) will also report. IBM has already preannounced a poor quarter and been struggling.

Futures are modestly lower after Tuesday’s strong bounce. The semiconductor group (SMH) is giving back about 1.7% in the early going, which looks like caution ahead of a binary event.

While we wait, Super Micro Computer’s (SMCI) preliminary earnings report is sending a positive signal but the issue is whether it is good enough to produce a change in trend.

The SMCI Report and Reaction

Super Micro builds servers that power AI data centers. When a hyperscaler or AI company orders thousands of Nvidia (NVDA) chips, those chips have to be assembled into a complete server system with cooling, power, and networking before they can do any work. That’s what Super Micro does. Dell (DELL) does the same thing.

These companies serve as the conduit between chip makers and data centers. The order flow there is one of the best indicators of whether AI infrastructure demand is accelerating or slowing.

The SMCI report was mixed. The company guided June-quarter revenue to the low end of its prior $11.0 billion to $12.5 billion range and below the consensus of $11.73 billion. But the good news is that gross margin guidance nearly doubled to a range of 15% to 17% from the prior 8.2% to 8.4%. Also, the backlog rose to record levels with more than $60 billion in new orders received during the June quarter alone. Strong demand and improved margins is why the stock is up 16% in premarket trading Wednesday.

The most interesting aspect of this report is that demand is running about 5 times what the company is capable of delivering. SMCI delivers roughly $11 billion to $12 billion of product per quarter and it just booked over $60 billion in new orders in a single quarter. The revenue shortfall is a delivery timing issue, not a demand problem.

Why the Reaction Matters More Than the Report

SMCI stock is surging on downside revenue guidance because investors are looking past the revenue miss and focused on the doubled margins and the record backlog. They are celebrating evidence that AI demand remains intact even when it arrives with a disappointing headline number.

However, it is important to consider what happened when Micron (MU) delivered a blowout report a few weeks ago. The stock celebrated for a day or two, and then rolled over into a decline of more than 30%. Strong reports have recently been tops in this market. The sustainability of the SMCI reaction will not be settled Wednesday.

Tonight Is the Test

The SMCI reaction is a taste of what lies ahead. Wednesday’s reports after the close are the meal. For Alphabet, the focus is whether the massive AI spending is producing results, with cloud growth and the health of the core search business as the key items. For Tesla, the attention is on capex, the robotaxi expansion, and the Optimus program.

The market has bounced hard for three days in front of these reports, which raises the stakes. Expectations have been marked back up from the lows. If the reports deliver, the recovery attempt can gain some momentum. If they disappoint, there is risk of a retesting the recent lows.

Strategy

I am not betting on the reaction to tonight’s news. I will trade what develops after the reports rather than gamble on the outcomes. The SMCI signal is encouraging for the AI demand story, but one preliminary report does not resolve the questions about margins, capex, and valuation that drove the correction. I would not chase SMCI at this point but I would look at it more closely if builds some support and consolidates.

The biotechnology names on my list continue to act well and that is where my buying interest stays focused. If tonight’s reports produce dislocations, the supply of opportunities will increase. Bad earnings news may be a negative for price action but it will create more trading opportunities.
