* Signs of growing adoption of organic light-emitting diode keep us bullish on Universal Display.

* Apple is now expected to fully shift the iPhone to that display technology next year, but more could be on the way.

* More foldable phones, including a tri-fold product, could spark competitive moves, driving demand higher.

* Auto interior display adoption continues, but exterior taillight usage is just starting.

If the spotlight wasn’t already on Universal Display OLED before, it soon will be. We are thinking this because several items have come to light that confirm the accelerating adoption of organic light-emitting diode displays. That adoption drives demand not only for Universal’s solutions but also for its intellectual licensing business — and it is why we intend being long-term owners of OLED shares.

Recent data points and their longer-term competitive implications suggest we are still in the early innings for this display technology, and we continue to see the roadmap following the one laid out by light-emitting diodes. While we have a relatively full position, should September weigh on the stock it could give us room to pick up some additional shares. Now let’s get to these items that keep us bullish:

What Keeps Us Bullish on OLED

The Nikkei is reporting Apple AAPL will use organic light-emitting diode displays for all iPhone models sold in 2025 and beyond, moving completely away from liquid crystal displays (LCDs). We’ve expected this for some time given Apple first used an organic light-emitting diode display back in 2017 with the iPhone X. With Apple now infusing the technology in its higher-end iPads, we expect to see it matriculate to other models as well. Rumblings suggests the next iteration of the iPad mini will be the next model to get the organic light-emitting diode treatment.

Two other items on our radar as it relates to Apple and organic light-emitting diode demand are its long-expected foray into foldable iPhones and tablets, and the adoption of Mac notebook products.

Speaking of foldable products, Samsung and Alphabet GOOGL recently showcased their latest models, but what Chinese smartphone vendor Huawei is expected to show could really turn heads. On September 10, one day after Apple’s “Glowtime” event, Huawei is slated to hold a "grand ceremony" where it will reveal new products, including a triple-fold smartphone with two opposing hinges and a 10-inch display. Given the multi-folding nature of that display, it’s extremely likely that organic light-emitting diode displays are being utilized.

Meanwhile, Huawei isn’t the only Chinese company making headlines with organic light-emitting diode displays. Chinese luxury auto company Hongqi launched its latest luxury executive sedan 14.2" rollable (sliding) organic light emitting diode display for the center multimedia display.

And while many folks may not have heard of Hongqi, a more widely known automotive company, Audi, which is owned by Volkswagen VWAGY, has unveiled its latest Q5 and SQ5 SUVs (2025 model). Both new cars adopt organic light-emitting diode tail lights and two displays using the technology inside the car.
