YELP - krikey, nice pop!

yelp is beyond worthless, reviews written by friends and enemies, laughable

what is really needed is a place for contractors, business owner, service providers to be able to post about the deadbeat crazy customers that have no idea of what they want but are lonely, or insane

I find Yelp quite invaluable.

I used to subscribe to Zagat, but found reviews stale and sometimes snobbish.

It was no better (or worse) than Yelp.

Big difference is that Yelp reaches smaller capillaries.

Yes, there are some bogus reviews, but who doesn't? If you use it a while you can spot em a mile away.

we go out a lot and the reviews are pretty much meaningless, just another way for people to vent their feelings in public on the web.

The proliferation of reputation-management-software that allows websites to remove/downplay negative comments makes me suspect of many online reviews.

its 99 all over again. you don't even NEED yelp. if you have a smartphone like apple you can type in cafe, restaurant, etc and find stuff via gps. you can also use their reviews, or even open table, etc

JIVE, mkt cap $1.5 billion? money losing mess. first came the social networks, then came the analytics, next up are the data managers. what you have is a massive investment in what I bet will be a very unproductive business development scheme. the business landscape is swarming with ernest young social networks marketing types, telling bewildered gift shop owners and taverns that they "just have to" maximise social networking. at some point, the sheer volume will mitigate the novelty and importance.

next big thing in social networking: mom's basement dotcom

YELP @ $24, where the traders are separated from the true believers, and the suckers are separated from their money
